James Comey's Clinton Email Announcement Leaves Voters In The Dark
HP | Ryan J. Reilly | 10/31/16

Three days have passed since FBI Director James Comey made the unprecedented decision to insert the bureau into the 2016 presidential campaign. There's just over a week left until Election Day. Yet voters trying to determine the potential impact of a newly uncovered trove of emails that may or may not implicate Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton have virtually nothing to go on other than reports sourced to anonymous law enforcement officials with differing agendas.

Comey told bureau employees on Friday that he felt obligated to send his now-famous letter to Congress out of an "abundance of caution." Comey's three-paragraph missive stated the bureau had not yet determined "whether or not this material may be significant," meaning that the news that has tossed the presidential campaign into chaos may ultimately have no impact on the investigation whatsoever. ... *DR | The Latest On FBI Director Comey And Hillary Clinton's Emails (10/31/16) [1hr]
Federal investigators have obtained a warrant to search the email server of a close aide to Hillary Clinton. In a surprise move on Friday -- just 11 days before the presidential election -- FBI Director James Comey informed Congress about new emails possibly linked to Clinton. In July the FBI announced no charges would be filed after it completed an investigation of Clinton's use of a private server while she was secretary of State. The FBI director has been sharply criticized by Democrats and even some Republicans for his ambiguous letter to Congress on Friday. Diane and her guests discuss the latest on the new probe and whether it could sway voters at the polls next week.
*DR | The Psychology Of Money And How To Use It Better (10/31/16) [1hr]
The way we think about spending and saving is frequently irrational. For example: The more something costs, the more careless we are about saving money on it compared with smaller purchases. But why? Psychology and neuroscience have some answers. While we may think we're in control of our financial decisions, psychology lecturer Claudia Hammond says research shows we're wired for certain behaviors toward money -- some of which can hurt us. But she says learning about these tendencies can help us take back some control. Understanding the psychology of money and how science can teach us to make better financial choices.

As Election Day Nears, 1 in 6 Americans Say They're Buying Guns and Half of Voters Expect Violence
AlterNet | Steven Rosenfeld | 10/27/16

How long will it be before someone gets shot by a Donald Trump supporter in what the shooter may likely consider an act of patriotic civil disobedience? Or before someone uses a gun against right-wing vigilantes?

There is no shortage of evidence pointing toward some violent outburst surrounding the presidential election results. Reporters interviewing Trump supporters at rallies, national polls showing likely voters are expecting Election Day violence, consumer-trend tracking firms saying demand is rising for gun purchases, and rhetoric from the longstanding cadre of right-wing loudmouths, all suggest some type of ugly response. ... The Real Reason We're In Syria Is Enraging But Not Surprising (10/27/16) [14:32]

Liberals are preparing blacklists of appointees they want Clinton to avoid
WashingtonPost | John Wagner | 10/28/16

... Planning for a Democratic victory on Nov. 8, these interest groups and like-minded lawmakers are laying the groundwork to push Clinton, if she is elected, to prove her progressive bona fides through early legislation and personnel appointments.

One liberal group has already forwarded 150 names of acceptable appointees for economic positions to Clinton's transition team, while others on the left are engaged in opposition research against prospects for administration jobs whom they see as unacceptable.

Leading liberal lawmakers -- including Sens. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) -- have also started conveying, privately and publicly, guidance on top Clinton appointees and legislative priorities.

The activity reflects the fragile alliance between Clinton and the progressive wing of her party as she nears the end of a tumultuous race against Republican Donald Trump. Although Clinton has campaigned on several of their key issues, many liberals remain skeptical that she will push those priorities adequately if she wins the presidency -- and wary that her ties to Wall Street might affect the administration she would build. ... Undercover With A Border Militia
Motherjones | Shane Bauer | Nov/Dec

I crawl out of the back of the pickup with my rifle in hand. "Keep your weapons nice and tight," Captain Pain orders. I am traveling light. Unlike the others, I don't view southern Arizona as a war zone, so I didn't put steel plates in my chest rig. Next to everyone else's commando-style AR-15s, my Ruger Mini-14 with a wood stock is slightly out of place. But everything else is square—I'm wearing a MultiCam uniform, desert tan combat boots, and a radio on my shoulder. I fit in just fine.

We are in a Walmart parking lot in Nogales. Captain Pain and a couple of others go into the store to get supplies. In Pain's absence, Showtime is our commanding officer. He is a Marine special-ops veteran who did three tours in Afghanistan. He has camo paint on his face and a yeti beard. He gets in the cab to check Facebook on his phone while Destroyer, Jaeger, Spartan, and I stand with our backs to the truck, rifles in hand, keeping watch for anything suspicious. Thanks To Trump, RNC Is In A Bad Financial Position Heading Into The General Election
HP | Paul Blumenthal | 10/26/16

Donald Trump has reportedly ceased raising money for the big dollar committee linking his campaign to the official Republican Party. This surprising move comes as Trump staggers to the election finish line. Even worse for Trump is that he has built essentially no campaign infrastructure to help get out the vote during the early voting period and on Election Day.

... Presidential campaigns are supposed to provide a flush of cash for the party. But Trump's effort has raised significantly less than previous Republican candidates even though he has been able to collect much larger checks. That has left the RNC in the worst financial shape it has been in at this point in a presidential election since the turn of the millennium. ... Read more

Hatred of Hillary Is Trump's Rallying Cry at Campaign Events North and South
AlterNet | Adele M. Stan | 10/25/16

Trump rallies well-heeled Southerners and dispossessed Rust-Belters with promises of past glory -- and lots of misogyny.

In Johnstown, Pennsylvania, a city down on its luck, Republican presidential nominee Donald J. Trump appeared before an enthusiastic, if a bit weary, crowd of several thousand at the Cambria County War Memorial Arena. He reminded the citizens of Cambria County of that which required no reminder: that the median annual household income in Johnstown, once a humming steel-manufacturing town, is a mere $25,000 per year. Then he promised them the return of their jobs, with no explanation of how he would do so.

They responded by chanting his name. From Pennsylvania Route 56, the way into town from the east, you catch your first glimpse of Johnstown, enveloped in the beauty of the Allegheny Mountains and marred by the unsightly evidence of poverty: boarded up homes and outbuildings, rusty residential trailers. On a windy day under gray, low-hanging clouds, the bleakness is amplified. This is Trump country -- at least according to the signage. ... Read more

'Michael Moore in TrumpLand': A Film Whose Surprising Healing Power Is Badly Needed Now
AlterNet | Sophia A. McClennen / Salon | 10/24/16

Amidst ongoing claims that Donald Trump might not concede the election if Hillary Clinton clinches the needed votes, Michael Moore has just released a new movie that might save our democracy from chaos. "Michael Moore in TrumpLand" is a film of a one-man stage performance Moore delivered on Oct. 7 in Ohio. Billed as the film that Ohio Republicans tried to shut down, it follows Oscar-winner Moore as he enters into hostile territory with the goal of influencing the November elections and saving us all from Trump.

The film opened in New York for a free screening on Tuesday the 18th. It is currently screening at the IFC Center in New York, where it broke the house record on Wednesday for a single screen opening, and Moore appeared at several shows over the weekend. It is also playing in Encino, California, and available on iTunes. Read more

*TYT | Elizabeth Warren: End Corporate Tax "Holidays" (10/24/16) [13:57]
Elizabeth Warren is taking the fight to corporate tax dodgers. Normal people don't get holidays from their taxes. Why should corporations?

"Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) is gearing up for a major tax battle next year, warning Democrats not to cave to corporate pressure in a coming push for comprehensive tax reform.

House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) and Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), who will become majority leader if Democrats take the upper chamber, have been in talks to reform the tax code in 2017.

Multinational companies are under increasing pressure from tax authorities around the globe, with signs that the era of easy access to tax havens may be coming to an end. With few places left to turn, U.S. companies want to bring their cash home ? but they want to do it without paying the tax they avoided by stashing it offshore to begin with.

The pro-corporate narrative in Washington warns that if taxes aren't cut, companies will go elsewhere. Warren said it's a bluff, and recent activity around the globe suggests she's right.

"Developed countries are cracking down on the tax dodgers. You saw what just happened with the European Commission ordering Ireland to collect $14 billion in back taxes from Apple," she said. "Corporations are running out of places to hide, with the G20 and the OECD [Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development] working together to end international tax avoidance. So I just think that argument no longer holds much weight. Instead of bailing out the tax dodgers under the guise of tax reform, Congress should seize this moment to repair our broken tax code."

Donald Trump's Campaign Just Launched A Live Nightly News Show
HP | Nico Pitney | 10/24/16

Donald Trump's presidential campaign on Monday began airing a live nightly video news program, fanning speculation that Trump may seek to capitalize on his supporters' zeal by launching a media network after November's election.

Co-host Boris Epshteyn, a senior adviser to Trump, insisted the Trump-focused news show was not a test run for anything else. "The left-wing media's even trying to spin this, believe it or not," Epshteyn said. "They're saying, well this is 'Trump TV.' That's not what this is. This is our campaign, and most importantly, our candidate being out there and speaking directly to the voters." ... Read more

Born on Third Base: A One Percenter Makes the Case for Tackling Inequality, Bringing Wealth Home, and Committing to the Common Good by Chuck Collins

As inequality grabs headlines, steals the show in presidential debates, and drives deep divides between the haves and have nots in America, class war brews. On one side, the wealthy wield power and advantage, wittingly or not, to keep the system operating in their favor?all while retreating into enclaves that separate them further and further from the poor and working class. On the other side, those who find it increasingly difficult to keep up or get ahead lash out?waging a rhetorical war against the rich and letting anger and resentment, however justifiable, keep us from seeing new potential solutions.

But can we suspend both class wars long enough to consider a new way forward? Is it really good for anyone that most of society's wealth is pooling at the very top of the wealth ladder? Does anyone, including the one percent, really want to live in a society plagued by economic apartheid?

It is time to think differently, says longtime inequality expert and activist Chuck Collins. Born into the one percent, Collins gave away his inheritance at 26 and spent the next three decades mobilizing against inequality. He uses his perspective from both sides of the divide to deliver a new narrative.

Collins calls for a ceasefire and invites the wealthy to come back home, investing themselves and their wealth in struggling communities. And he asks the non-wealthy to build alliances with the one percent and others at the top of the wealth ladder.

Stories told along the way explore the roots of advantage, show how taxpayers subsidize the wealthy, and reveal how charity, used incorrectly, can actually reinforce extreme inequality. Readers meet pioneers who are crossing the divide to work together in new ways, including residents in the author's own Boston-area neighborhood who have launched some of the most interesting community transition efforts in the nation.

*DR | AT&T's Proposed Acquisition Of Time Warner (10/25/16) [1hr]
The chief executives at AT&T and Time Warner say they're ready for a rigorous review, and that's more than likely what's coming. On Saturday the two announced a plan for AT&T to acquire Time Warner for a purchase price of $84.5 billion. Time Warner's entertainment products include HBO, CNN and Warner Brothers film and TV studio. AT&T offers phone, internet, cable and internet services, and now, if this deal is approved, content. Proponents argue the deal will accelerate innovation in the media and telecommunications industries, but others say it's consumers who will be picking up the tab. Join us to discuss AT&T's plan to join forces with Time Warner.
*DR | Civility, Public Discourse And The 2016 Presidential Campaign (10/25/16) [1hr]
A recent survey of likely voters finds that 76 percent say civility has declined over the last decade, to the point where most Americans believe the lack of civility in politics is a "crisis." In that same survey, twice as many voters blame Republican candidate Donald Trump for the rising incivility. He has called his opponent in this race "the devil," "a liar" and "a nasty woman." Some say what we are seeing in this election reflects a change in the culture of manners and decorum, including a blurring of the lines between private and public talk. Guest host Derek McGinty and guests discuss the decline of civility, a divisive presidential election and what it could mean for the democratic process.

On September 11, 2001, 19 terrorists attacked the Unites States. They hijacked four airplanes in mid-flight. The terrorists flew two of the planes into two skyscrapers at the World Trade Center in New York City. The impact caused the buildings to catch fire and collapse. Another plane destroyed part of the Pentagon (the U.S. military headquarters) in Arlington, Virginia. The fourth plane crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Officials believe that the terrorists on that plane intended to destroy either the White House or the U.S. Capitol. Passengers on the plane fought the terrorists and prevented them from reaching their goal. In all, nearly 3,000 people were killed in the 9/11 attacks.

Wall Street and Banksters

Wall Street is an eight-block-long street running roughly northwest to southeast from Broadway to South Street, at the East River, in the Financial District of Lower Manhattan in New York City. Over time, the term has become a metonym for the financial markets of the United States as a whole, the American financial services industry (even if financial firms are not physically located there), or New York-based financial interests.

China Valley of Tunnels

China Valley of Tunnels

A report written by a Georgetown University team led by Phillip Karber conducted a three-year study to map out Chinas complex tunnel system, which stretches 5,000 km (3,000 miles). The report determined that the stated Chinese nuclear arsenal is understated and as many as 3,000 nuclear warheads may be stored in the underground tunnel network.
The Vietnam War

The Vietnam War

Ken Burns and Lynn Novick's ten-part, 18-hour documentary series, THE VIETNAM WAR, tells the epic story of one of the most consequential, divisive, and controversial events in American history as it has never before been told on film. Visceral and immersive, the series explores the human dimensions of the war through revelatory testimony of nearly 80 witnesses from all sides--Americans who fought in the war and others who opposed it, as well as combatants and civilians from North and South Vietnam. Ten years in the making, the series includes rarely seen and digitally re-mastered archival footage from sources around the globe, photographs taken by some of the most celebrated photojournalists of the 20th Century, historic television broadcasts, evocative home movies, and secret audio recordings from inside the Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon administrations.
